I was recently in a Facebook group where someone asked what everyone’s biggest obstacle with marketing was. Almost everyone said that they were overwhelmed with the different kinds of marketing activities out there and were uncertain of which ones to pursue. Luckily, this is why Pizzaphant exists: to help you navigate the marketing landscape to achieve the greatest ROI.
As a marketing strategist, I try to keep up with the latest marketing trends: artificial intelligence, chat bots, predictive learning, voice search marketing, and the list goes on. You can spend your whole life trying to figure out how to market your business online. As it’s impossible to be all things to all customers, it’s also impossible to successfully execute every single marketing trend out there.
So, rather than figure out everything, let’s stick to five things that you can do RIGHT NOW to market your business online. If you’re already doing these things, great—you’re on the right path. If you’re not, take 15 minutes today to do one of the things, 15 minutes tomorrow to do something else, and so on and so forth.
Of course, if you’re still overwhelmed, shoot me a message. I am happy to help you navigate the marketing waters for your business (though probably not for free).
5 Things You Can Do RIGHT NOW to Market Your Business Online
1. Sign Up for Google My Business
To simplify search engine optimization (SEO) for the sake of this blog, there are two types of organic search results on a Google search results page: the main search results and the local pack.
As you can see, Pizzaphant is first in the search results for the term “Chicago marketing consulting small businesses,” but because we dropped out of the local pack, our search result is halfway down the page. Why did we slip out of the local pack? Well, for a couple reasons: 1) we just updated our physical address a few weeks ago so it’ll take some time for Google to recognize us again and 2) we’re a national business, and so our website doesn’t necessarily focus on Chicago alone.
But, as you can see, even if your regular SEO doesn’t put you on the first page of the search results, you still have a chance to get there through the local pack.
The first step to getting into the local pack is building a Google My Business page. Google uses the information and the items you post on that page to determine your relevancy to a local area. Build your page and post frequently so that your website becomes part of the local pack.

2. Write a Blog Post
Google determines what keywords your website is relevant for by crawling your website regularly. The more words your website has, the more opportunities you have to come up in search. However, user experience is another factor in Google’s search algorithm and Google will dock you for shoving a bunch of keywords onto your website. So, how do you provide Google with enough words to crawl without writing a novel on your website?
Through blog posts.
In our blog post about starting a blog, we mention that small businesses will see a rise in traffic with 4-5 posts a month and a drastic increase in traffic with 11+ posts a month, but even one post a month will probably drive someone to your website.
Commit to blogging. Find topics you’re passionate about that relate to your business. Use blogging as a way to learn more about your industry while you drive traffic to your website.

3. Use Social Media as An Additional Way to Promote Your Business
As much flack as social media gets nowadays, it’s still a useful way to promote your business and build followers. Create a social media strategy (or hire us to do it for you). Choose a social media platform or two that you know you can manage and post on regularly and make a concerted effort to post. Social media helps create relatable and interesting brands—don’t just post about your business. Find out what interests and activities your ideal client has and post about those things. Follow the experts in your industry and comment on their posts. Engage, engage, engage, or social media will not be a useful endeavor for you.
Already posting on social media, but not sure if your posts are effective? We can conduct a social media audit on you and your competitors to best determine what you should do to receive the most value out of social media.
4. Answer Questions on Quora
Quora is a great way to build backlinks (another aspect of SEO) and to promote yourself as an expert in your industry. Quora is a question and answer website where questions are asked and answered by the community of users.
Begin by searching for key terms within Quora. For instance, if you are in the marketing strategy business, like we are, type in “marketing strategy” in the search bar and see what questions are interesting and relevant to your business. Submit the answer and voila! you’re on your way to showcasing your expertise.
5. Sign Up for Google Analytics and Google Search Console
So, this isn’t actively helping you market your business online, but it will help you be smarter about the marketing you end up doing. Peter Drucker once said that you can’t manage what you don’t measure. Google Analytics and Google Search Console are great ways to measure what you’re doing. They are free and take a gmail address (create one for your business) and a couple clicks to install on your website.
Google Analytics will give you information about the traffic coming to your website: what pages users are visiting, how long they are staying, basic demographics, and other information. Google Search Console focuses on the keywords users are using to find your website, in addition to any errors Google might come upon when crawling your site. Google Search Console integrates with Google Analytics, providing you with a robust look at how users are coming to your website and what pages they are visiting.
The most important part of how to market your business online (outside of creating a marketing strategy and plan) is to start doing something. If you don’t have money to market your business online, that’s fine. Just spend some time every day on one of the tasks mentioned above and you’ll see an increase in traffic and opportunities.
